Definition – What does File mean?

The file is a collection of data stored in one unit that is identified by a unique filename. It can be an image, videos, audios or documents, application or other kinds of collection of data. Files used in a computer are same in feature to that of paper documents used in office files or library. There are multiple types of files such as text files, binary files, directory files and graphics files, etc. each type of files contains different information. In the operating system, files can be stored on optical drives, hard disk drive or another kind of storage device.

Almost all the operating systems, a file must have a unique name within the file directory. While producing a filename, certain characters are considered illegal and hence can’t be used. The file is comprised of a name with the suffix that is also known as the file extension. All file extension is two or four characters that follow the period in the full filename. This extension helps in identifying the type of file, format, and attribute associated with the file.
