Definition – What does Keyboard mean?
The keyboard is one of the most important computer devices that is used as an input device. Its design comes from the typewriter keyboards that set letters, numbers and functions in a way that prevented the type-bars from getting jammed when typing fast. This keyboard layout is called QWERTY keyboard design that gets its name from the first six letters across the keyboard in the upper-left-hand corner.

While the design of the keyboard may have come from typewriters, today’s computer keyboard has many other keys as well. Modifier keys, such as Control, Alt, and Command key can be used in conjunction with other keys as shortcuts in order to perform certain operations. Nowadays, most of the keyboards also have a row of function keys such as F1, F2, F3 through F16 along the top of the keyboard, arrow keys set in an upside-down T, and a numeric keypad on the right-hand side. Even some keyboards have more buttons that allow you to change the system volume, open programs such as your e-mail or Web browser or eject a CD.
